EVMS faculty named among top doctors in Hampton Roads —

region's top family physicians. The interview is
in the magazine's July/August edition along with
the annual "Top Doctors" listing, which includes
several other EVMS full-time and community

Cookout raises $40,000 for Diabetes Center
— Hundreds of hungry EVMS supporters filled
Naval Station Norfolk's Fleet Recreation Park on
June 25 for the 15th annual Cookout for the
Cure.
The event, hosted by the Hampton Roads Shipping
Association and the International Longshoremen's
Association, raises funds to support the EVMS
Strelitz Diabetes Center. It features teams from
organizations throughout Hampton Roads battling
to see who has mastered the art of the grill.
When the smoke cleared, ILA Local 1248 was named
winner of the People's Choice award.

Research discovery may point way to new
treatments for diabetes, heart disease — EVMS scientists studying fat cells have
demonstrated what may be a vital step in the
progression of diabetes and heart disease, a
discovery that could lead to the development of
ground-breaking new treatments.

President
Lester to stay three more years — The Board
of Visitors acted unanimously June 9 to extend
the employment contract for Harry T. Lester,
President of Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Praising him for his "visionary leadership," the
Board recognized Mr. Lester for his efforts to
secure financial security for the school and to
strengthen relationships with key partners. Mr.
Lester has been President of the school since
2005.
