Dr. Catesby Ware, Chief of the Divsion of Sleep Medicine was recently interviewed by the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) to raise awareness on the importance and impact of sleep disorders. Dr. Ware notes, "In the USA, 40,000-50,000 people die yearly in traffic accidents. Up to 20% are thought related to fatigue and tiredness. Sleepiness, like drinking alcohol, destablizes the car's position on the road. Experiencing sleepiness whilst driving and driving under the influence of alcohol are similarly deadly." The EVMS Division of Sleep Medicine is a joint program of Eastern Virginia Medical School and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. We have helped patients with sleep problems since 1980. In 1986, we became the first Center in Virginia, and the second one on the East Coast, to be accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
We provide the full range of diagnostic services and treatment for sleep disorders. EVMS Sleep Medicine is staffed by medical professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of such sleep disorders, particularly snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome.
We also conduct research on normal sleepers and those with sleep problems. We have tested most sleeping pills marketed today. In addition, we conduct driving simulation research to evaluate sleepiness and highway safety.
