Urogynecology

Urogynecology is a subspecialty within Obstetrics & Gynecology that is dedicated to the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders, such as urinary or fecal incontinence and prolapse (bulging) of the vagina, bladder and/or uterus.

After completing a residency program in Obstetrics & Gynecology, urogynecologists undergo fellowship training, spending several years focusing only on these disorders.

Some problems due to Pelvic Floor Dysfunction include:

  1. Incontinence: loss of bladder or bowel control
  2. Prolapse: descent of pelvic organs (dropped uterus, bladder or vagina)
  3. Emptying disorders: difficulty urinating or moving bowels
  4. Overactive bladder: frequent need to void, bladder pressure, incontinence (leakage of urine) or difficulty holding back a full bladder
