The hospitalist oversees the entire inpatient hospital admission of their patients to include ordering tests, prescribing medications and monitoring test results.

The hospitalist communicates continuously with each patient and their referring physician to ensure coordination of care.  Hospitalists programs have been shown to improve patient's clinical outcomes by shorter lengths of stay and fewer readmissions.
